College Guidance

For many young people, applying to college is the first step towards independence. We encourage our students to make these decisions on their own and accept responsibility for the consequences. This is both an exhilarating and frightening process. To help clarify the college application process we have defined and listed below our responsibilities and student responsibilities. We want to partner with our students and parents to help them through this very exciting time.

Parents are always welcome to call or email the office with questions or thoughts and are encouraged to schedule appointments when necessary. Students should feel free to stop by or make an appointment to meet with me at anytime.

Our responsibilities
Give guidance and information about the application process. Offer college information night to provide detailed information about the college application process and the financial aid process.

Make available catalogues, books, DVD’s and videos for student use.

Provide materials needed to take the PSAT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, ACT, and AP exams. Offer PSAT practice sessions. Offer score interpretation

Arrange to have school days off during senior year to visit colleges

Send transcripts, letters of recommendations, and additional requested information to colleges.

Keep colleges informed of your progress, including mid year reports and final transcripts

Student Responsibilities
Research the type of college that is best suited to you and your individual learning style

Make the most of your academic assets and attempt to reach your potential in all you do at MJBHA. Enroll in review program or tutoring for standardized testing when necessary

Complete all applications in a thorough and timely manner. Do not wait until the last minute for this very important step in the application process. Mail in time to meet all deadlines. Keep in mind that these deadlines are extremely early for Early Decision or Early Action.

If an essay is required, make sure that it is thoughtful as well as technically correct and that it says something important about who you are. Ask a knowledgeable person to check the content, grammar, style, spelling, punctuation, and so on. Remember that this may be your only opportunity to impress the college in a personal way. You should take every opportunity to let your light shine.

When you request recommendations from your teachers, complete as much of the form as you can. Provide the teacher with an envelope that is both stamped and addressed properly. Give the teacher as much time as you can (preferably three weeks) to write a recommendation that demonstrates how well the teacher knows you, believes in you and believes that you are a perfect fit for that particular institution.

Request that MJBHA send transcripts by completing a transcript request form. Official transcripts will be sent by mail directly to the college
