Model U.N.

For many years the MJBHA has fielded award winning teams at the Yeshiva University National Model United Nations (YUNMUN).YUNMUN is a student-run simulation of the workings of the real United Nations. Its aim is to allow students to experience and learn about international diplomacy. Playing the roles of real United Nations delegates, yeshiva high school students from all over North America represent a variety of views, often ones with which they may or may not agree. They also have to research their country's position, adding both to their knowledge of world affairs and to their appreciation of the importance of preparation and critical evaluation. The program is open to students in grades 9-12 and all prospective delegates and alternates are chosen through an audition process that is held during the first 2 months of the school year (depending on when the Yamim Tovim fall) . Selected students spend about four months researching aspects of an assigned country’s political, economic, and social agenda. Additionally, we focus on the skills needed to be an effective delegate such as public speaking, being able to respond to questions and comments, debate skills, coalition building and overall comportment. Preparation and discussion meetings are held one-two times per week typically during lunch but may occasionally take place after school hours. YUNMUN XXI will take place at the Stamford Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Stamford, Connecticut February 6-8, 2011. Cost for this program including transportation, hotel accommodations, all meals and programs is expected to be paid by the delegates. A portion of this program is subsidized through the generous support of the MJBHA Vaad Horim (PTO).
